Brigham Young 90, Washington 79: Tyler Haws scored 37 points and the host Cougars won their opening-round game in the NIT.

Haws, a sophomore guard who came in averaging 20.9 points, shot 15-for-24 while producing his second-highest scoring game of the season. Brandon Davies contributed 22 points and nine rebounds and Matt Carlino finished with 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for third-seeded BYU (22-11), which will play Tennessee or Mercer in the second round.

C.J. Wilcox scored 20 points to lead the sixth-seeded Huskies (18-16). Shawn Kemp Jr. added 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds and Andrew Andrews finished with 12 points off the bench for Washington.

BYU led for most of the first half, extending its lead to as many as seven points before Wilcox hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left to give the Huskies a 35-33 halftime lead. Haws had 17 points at the half.

The Cougars went ahead by nine thanks to a 9-0 run that was capped by Carlino’s 3-pointer with 12:17 remaining. Washington trimmed the deficit to three, but Carlino hit another 3 with 6:36 left and the Huskies never got back within six points the rest of the way.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wilcox grew up 10 miles from BYU in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and played on the same AAU team as Haws. Wilcox's father, Craig, played for the Cougars from 1993-95. … BYU improved to 7-1 all-time in NIT games played on its home floor at the Marriott Center. The only loss came against Washington in 1982. … The Cougars won a postseason game for the fourth consecutive season, extending the school record.
